How to play krillion

The complete guide to the rarest-answer dive — how to play krillion, from your first prompt to the trench floor.

The dive

A dive is seven prompts. Each prompt is open-ended — "name a river," "name a dog breed" — and you get 25 seconds to type one answer. There is no multiple choice and no single correct answer: dozens of answers are accepted, and they are scored by rarity.

The instinct to fight is the obvious one. "Nile" is a fine answer to "name a river" — and that is exactly why it scores like plankton. The diver who types "Mekong" sinks ten times deeper on the same prompt.

The six tiers

Every accepted answer lands on one of six rungs. Rarer means richer:

Krillion depth zones chart from the sunlit shallows down to the hadal trench
Depth zones your score carries you through, 0 to 7,000 metres.

Depth is your score

Each point sinks you 10 metres. Cross 200m and sunlight fades; pass 1,000m into the midnight zone; at 3,800m you drift past where the Titanic rests; a perfect 700 points plants you at 7,000m on the trench floor.

Small typos are forgiven automatically. If an answer isn't recognized, you'll see "no echo. try again" — the clock keeps running, so think fast and try another. Answers are never revealed, not even after the dive: the mystery is the game.

Strategy in three lines

1. Dodge the first answer. Whatever pops into your head first popped into everyone's head first.

2. Go specific, not weird. Real but uncommon beats random — the depths reward genuine obscurity.

3. Watch the clock. A timed-out prompt scores zero. A plankton answer still sinks you 100 metres.

The takeaway

That is how to play krillion: dodge the obvious, favor the genuinely obscure, and respect the clock. The rest is just water — 7,000 metres of it.
